Happy Memorial Day — Honoring Those Who Gave Their All!!!

Happy Memorial Day — Honoring Those Who Gave Their All!!!

This is an old post from 5 years ago.  I thought in honor of those who gave their all I would re-post.  I hope that everyone has had an enjoyable day with family and friends.

Today we are celebrating Memorial Day.  When I was a kid, Memorial Day was always the 30th of May. It was called Decoration Day.  It was made a national holiday in 1971, at that time it was moved to the last Monday in May.

Memorial Day is the day we remember what it means to be a hero. A day to remember the heroes who gave their all for their buddy next to them and for our freedom. These are the real heroes.   It is also a day we can thank those who did not get recognized with the honor they deserved when they returned from the war.

The church I grew up in still calls it Decoration Day.  It is a big event.  Everyone takes a dish and lunch is served.  Family and friends that live out of town come for the celebration.  It is a good time to catch up with family and old friends who live out of town that you do not get to visit often.  I have a friend from childhood that has come from Oregon this year for the event as he was in the war. A far ride for an oldster, Oregon to North Carolina.

I remember the little paper poppies sold by the veterans from the local American Legion to raise money for the needs of the disabled veterans.  Poppies became the symbol of the American Legion.  The other day when I was shopping there were two old veterans sitting outside the entrance of the store taking donations.  If you made a donation, they gave you one of the little paper poppies.  Sure brought back memories of childhood and Decoration Day.

Lt. Col. John McCrae wrote a poem called “In Flander’s Field”. 1915  He had walked in a field of poppies where crosses were laid out to mark the graves of the fallen.  You can see at the end of this blog post.  There was also another poem written by Moina Michael as a tribute to Lt. Col. John McCrae’s  “In Flander’s Field”.  It too is at the end of this post.

Belgium Flanders Field

Flanders Field, Belgium John McCrae, 1872-1918 One of the most famous World War I poems was written in 1915 by Canadian John McCrae. He was inspired to write his poem on May 3rd, 1915, after performing the burial service of Alexis Helmer, a friend and fellow soldier who died in the Second Battle of Ypres, Belgium the day before. At the time, he had noted how quickly the poppies grew around the graves of those who had died. Sitting in the back of an ambulance, he composed the poem, then crumpled the paper and threw it away. Another soldier retrieved the poem and convinced McCrae to submit it for publication. McCrae worked on the poem for months before submitting it to The Spectator in London. Although they rejected it, the poem was sent to Punch where it was published on December 8th, 1915. “In Flanders Field” became the most popular poem of its era. It was republished throughout the world and became synonymous with the sacrifice of soldiers in World War I. Real poppies became a symbol for honoring soldiers of World War I are worn to this day on Remembrance Day.  Click the link below the picture and it will take you to the website this information is from.

In Flander’s Field
By Lt. Col. John McCrae, 1915
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow.,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

Lt. Col. John McCrae died of pneumonia in 1918 and is buried in Wimereux, France

We Shall Keep the Faith”
By Moina Michael
Oh! You who sleep in Flanders fields,
Sleep sweet – to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With All who died

We cherish, too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led;
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders field

And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honor of our dead
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We’ll teach the lesson that you wrought
In Flanders field

Stampin’ Up! Seaside Bay– Happy Birthday

Stampin’ Up! Seaside Bay– Happy Birthday

My card I am sharing today is for the birds — pun intended.  The challenge I am entering today has a bird theme.  I am using Stampin’ Up! Seaside Bay stamp set.  The other elements of the card are scraps left from previous cards so I decided to use them.  The Night of Navy frame  is the negative piece left when I die cut a panel for another card.  I think it made a nice frame for this card.

I am entering The Sisterhood of Crafters Challenge.  Their theme for this challenge is birds.

The birds, sea shells, and seagrass are also left overs from other cards.  The pieces were die cut from By The Bay Designer Series Paper earlier.

The Happy Birthday greeting from Stampin’ Up! Pansy Patch stamp set is stamped in Night of Navy ink on a piece of Basic White card stock then die cut using a die from Stylish Shapes Dies.  Several pieces of Seagrass bling (long retired) is added to the card front.

A piece of By The Bay Designer Series Paper is used for the inside panel.  I stamped seashells and sand across the bottom using stamps from Stampin’ Up! Seaside Bay stamp set and Crumb Cake ink.  The sentiment is stamped in Night of Navy ink.

A Basic White envelope gets a panel of By The Bay Designer Series Paper adhered to the envelope flap  using Multipurpose Liquid Glue.

Thank you for stopping by today. I hope you took the time to linger and look at my other blog post and cards and that you will join me on my stamping journey as I share my cards with you each day. My hope and wish are that you will be inspired to create amazing creations yourself. Feel free to CAS(E) any card. Any questions you may have, you know you can always contact me. Stampin’ Up! Pansy Patch — Happy Birthday

Stampin’ Up! Pansy Patch — Happy Birthday

Stampin’ up! Pansy Patch stamp set has been one of my favorites.  I am so happy it was carried over to the 2023-2024 Annual Catalog.  The pansies make beautiful card.  Along with the stamp set, I used a die from the Scallop Contour Dies, and Timeworn Type 3D Embossing Folder.

I am entering the Global Design Project Challenge.

I am also entering the Freshly Made Sketches Challenge.

My card base is Fresh Freesia  card stock.  I embossed a panel of the same using Timeworn Type 3D Embossing Folder.  This panel is adhered to the card base using Multipurpose Liquid Glue.

  1. It took me a while to realize which piece went with which piece for the pansies.  The leaves were easy. These are the pieces you need to die cut to create 2 pansies.  I like that as you die cut the pieces are embossed also.  I may have cut one or two pieces extra not realizing I needed only one of that piece.  You will see as you progress through the diagrams how to put the pieces together to create the pansies.
  2.  It takes three petals to create the pansy.  I used Fresh Freesia card stock and Blackberry Bliss card stock for the pansies.  For the leaves, I used Olive Olive card stock and Pear Pizziaz card stock.  You can see from #2 how I adhered the pieces together that create the pansy.  It takes one of the petals on line one and two of the petals on the second line.
  3. The two center piece are adhered next.
  4. This is how the pansy looks after the three petals are adhered together.
  5. Shows how the pansies look with the two center pieces.
  6. This is how the pansies look put together with all the die cuts that create the pansies.
  7. This is how the pansies look made into a card.  Bottom picture is the sample.

I die cut a panel of Soft Succulent using one of the dies from Scalloped Contour Dies. I then embossed using Timeworn Type 3D Embossing Folder.  The pansies are arranged on the Soft Succulent panel, adhered with Multipurpose Liquid Glue or stampin’ Dimensionals.

A greeting from Stampin’ Up! Pansy Patch stamp set is stamped in Black Berry Bliss ink on a scrap of Soft Succulent card stock, fussy cut, adhered to a scrap of Fresh Freesia card stock, fussy cut again, then popped on the card front using Stampin’ Dimensionals.  Flat Adhesive Backed Pearls are popped around the card front.

A Basic White medium envelope gets a pansy stamped on the envelope flap.

Thank you for stopping by today. I hope you took the time to linger and look at my other blog post and cards and that you will join me on my stamping journey as I share my cards with you each day. Stampin’ Up! Legendary Ride Easel Fold for the SU Demos Fun Fold Blog Hop

Stampin’ Up! Legendary Ride Easel Fold for the SU Demos Fun Fold Blog Hop

Welcome to the monthly Fun Folds Blog Hop with Independent Stampin’ Up! Demonstrators!!

We have a great lineup of talented crafters for you today, who enjoy creating fun folds.  If you love fun folds, I am hoping you find inspiration and enjoyment so much that you will be inspired to join us next time.  You are in for a treat with all the talented demonstrators participating. You can find that list   located at the end of the post about my card creation.

The card I am sharing today is another fun fold easel card but this time it is landscape instead of portrait.  I used Stampin’ Up! Legendary Ride stamp set and Legendary Dies.  I also use one of the embossing folders from Basic 3 D Embossing Folders.

I am entering Use Your Stuff Challenge.  The theme for this challenge is Technique.  The technique I used is masking sentiments to get the words I wanted them to say.  I also used embossing and die cutting.

First thing I did was die cut the motorcycle and pieces from Basic Black card stock for the body of the motorcycle, Silver Foil for the frame and wheels and Bubble Bath card stock for the seat.  Bubble Bath being such a light pink it doesn’t show up very well as a color in pictures, lesson learned is to use a darker pink next time.  The diagram about shows how to apply the individual pieces to create the completed bike.  I learned the hard way, I put a wrong piece on first and had to start all over by die cutting pieces again.

I cut a piece of Basic Black card stock, scoring at 2-3/4″ and 5-1/2″.  I folded the card at score lines and burnished well.  The 2-3/4″ fold becomes the piece to adhere the card front.  You can see in the diagram above how it is folded.  I cut pieces of Bubble Bath card stock and Orchid Oasis card stock for the layers.  I embossed each layer using a die from Basic 3D Embossing Folders.  The pieces are adhered together using Multipurpose Liquid Glue.

After all the layers are together the motorcycle is popped on the card front using Stampin’ Dimensionals!  I colored Rhinestone Basic Jewels using a Dark Orchid Oasis Stampin’ Blends Marker.  These are popped around the card front and around the greeting that appears when the card is made into an easel.

Open the card and you see the sentiments from Stampin’ Up! Legendary Ride stamp set at the top of the Basic White card stock panel. I did a bit of masking to get the sentiments to say the words needed.  The sentiments are stamped in Tuxedo Memento Black ink.  At the bottom of the panel you will find the greeting stamped on a piece of Basic White card stock in Tuxedo Memento Black ink.  The greeting is die cut using a die from Stampin’ Up! All That Dies.  The greeting becomes the stop for the easel when the card is opened and ready to stand.

Basic White Medium Envelope  get a panel of Bubble Bath card stock applied to the applied to the envelope flap using Multipurpose Liquid Glue after the piece has been embossed using an embossing folder from Basic 3D Embossing Folders.

My card is a combination between Amy Koender’s  and Rae Burnet

Stampin’ Up! Cheerful Daisies — Love & Big Hugs!!

The card I am sharing today is an easel card.  They are so simple and easy to make.  I used Stampin’ Up! Cheerful Daisies stamp set and Dies, Basic 3 D Embossing Folder, a sentiment from Stampin’ Up! Sending Smiles stamp set and Fresh As A Daisy Designer Series Paper.

I am entering the Tic, Tac, Toe Challenge for this card.  I choose the top row.

I started with a Basic White  card stock base cut 4-1/4″ x 11″. I then scored the piece at 2-1/8″ and 5-1/2″.  I folded and creased well.  The mountain fold of the 2-1/8″ piece because the piece you attach the card front to using adhesive of your choice.  I used Tear & Tape.

I embossed two pieces of Moody Mauve Designer Series Paper using an embossing folder from Basic 3 D Embossing Folders.  I also, embossed a piece of Basic White card stock. I then layered these together using Multipurpose Liquid Glue.  To the last panel of Moody Mauve, I added a panel cut from Fresh As A Daisy Designer Series Paper.

I stamped a greeting from Stampin’ Up! Sending Smiles stamp set on a scrap of Basic White card stock using Tuxedo Memento Black ink.  I then die cut the greeting out using a die from Sending Smiles Dies.  I popped it on the bottom of the card front using Stampin’ Dimensionals.  I colored Rhinestone Basic Jewels using a Dark Moody Mauve Stampin’ Blends Marker.

I die cut a daisy from Basic White, Bubble Bath, and Moody Mauve card stock. I layered and popped on the inside Moody Mauve card stock panel embossed using a embossing folder from Basic 3 D Embossing Folders.  I added leaves left over from another card.  I popped two Rhinestone Basic Jewels colored using a Dark Moody Mauve Stampin’ Blends Markers.  This daisy is the stop for the easel.
