Pleasant Poppies for Memorial Day

Pleasant Poppies for Memorial Day

In honor of Memorial Day and those who served, gave their all and the many who were not appreciated, I have a poppy card.  This is a very retired stamp set from Stampin Up, but I have always liked the poppies so much and this is an appropriate time to be using it.  The blue and white mat is also a retired product from Stampin Up.  The red ribbon also.  I stamped then embossed the art piece using clear embossing powder but it turns out white and colored using a blender pen and Real Red Stampin Pad.  I stamped the poppies for the inside sentiment also.

 (Remembering our fallen heroes.)

Monday we celebrate Memorial Day.  When I was a kid, Memorial Day was always the 30th of May. It was called Decoration Day.  It was made a national holiday in 1971, at that time it was moved to the last Monday in May.

Memorial Day is the day we remember what it means to be a hero. A day to remember the heroes who gave their all for their buddy next to them and for our freedom. These are the real heroes.   It is also a day we can thank those who did not get recognized with the honor they deserved when they returned from the war.

The church I grew up in still calls it Decoration Day.  It is a big event.  Everyone takes a dish and lunch is served.  Family and friends that live out of town come for the celebration.  It is a good time to catch up with family and old friends who live out of town that you do not get to visit often.  I have a friend from childhood that has come from Oregon this year for the event as he was in the war. A far ride for an oldest, Oregon to North Carolina.

I remember the little paper poppies sold by the veterans from the local American Legion to raise money for the needs of the disabled veterans.  Poppies became the symbol of the American Legion.  The other day when I was shopping there were two old veterans sitting outside the entrance of the store taking donations.  If you made a donation, they gave you one of the little paper poppies.  Sure brought back memories of childhood and Decoration Day.

Lt. Col. John McCrae wrote a poem called “In Flander’s Field”. He had walked in a field of poppies where crosses were laid out to mark the graves of the fallen.  You can see at the end of this blog post.  There was also another poem written by Moina Michael as a tribute to Lt. Col. John McCrae’s  “In Flander’s Field”.  It too is at the end of this post.

My card is entered in The Sisterhood of Crafter’s Challenge for the week.

In Flander’s Field
By Lt. Col. John McCrae, 1915
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow.,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

Lt. Col. John McCrae died of pneumonia in 1918 and is buried in Wimereux, France
_____________

We Shall Keep the Faith”
By Moina Michael
Oh! You who sleep in Flanders fields,
Sleep sweet – to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With All who died

We cherish, too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led;
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders field

And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honor of our dead
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We’ll teach the lesson that you wrought
In Flanders field

Congratulation On Your Graduation

Congratulation On Your Graduation

This card is for a dear young woman that graduated last week from my old school.  She is a precious young woman and is taking a gap year to go as a missionary.  I told her I could not be one that goes, so I would be a sender.

Cardstock is Stampin Up in Blushing Bride, Old Olive, and Whisper White.  How would this card look if the base was Melon Mambo, a dark pink and the mat was from the new Highland Heather or Balmy Blue.  The flowers in the card would take on a whole new look.   You can look at the color chart at the bottom of this post.

The embossing folder is Stampin Up’s Layered Leaves.  I used the Stitched  Shape Framelits to cut the Whisper White for the art piece.  The flowers for the art piece are from Power Poppy.  They have beautiful flowers and I just could not resist them once I saw some cards made using them.

I find it amazing that two pictures of the same picture can be so different in color, just from lighting.  One darker than the other.

Two Stampin Up retired punches was used to punch the piece for the greeting.  You can use other punches for this also.

The pearls are from the Pearl Basic Jewels from Stampin Up.  The Linen thread for the bow is a Stampin up product.

The inside sentiment is stamped in Blushing Bride Ink from Stampin Up on a panel of Whisper White.  The sentiment is from Verve Stamps

I am entering my card in the Cupcake Inspiration Challenge 446.Here are the cuts for the card:

  • Blushing Bride for card base – 4-1/4 x 11 scored at -1/2
  • Old Olive –4 x 5-1/4
  • Whisper White for art piece – 3-3/4 x 3-3/4
  • Whisper White for inside sentiment – 4 x – 5-1/4

There are still four color collections, each with ten colors. There is also a new color group called Basics.

In order to keep our color collections to exclusive Stampin’ Up! colors, we moved Basic Black, Very Vanilla, and Whisper White out of the Neutrals collection. We’ve also moved a few colors into the Neutrals collection, making it more exciting and colorful!

Some additional colors have changed collections as well—you’ll notice this as you look through the new collections above. You can refer to the old and new color charts in the 2018-2019 catalog.  You should have your catalog by now.  If you have not received it, please let me know.  These changes were based on needing to maintain color balance in our updated collections. For example, Poppy Parade is now the brightest red so it is part of the Brights collection.

Marriage Made In Heaven

Marriage Made In Heaven

I loved making this card as it is white on white.  I think white on white is so stunning.    My card will be for the WWC169-Charlotte’s “All About Occasions” Challenge.

Since my card is all white, there isn’t too much you can say about it.  The base, mat, and heart art piece are all Whisper White cardstock.  The mat is embossed using a heart embossing folder that is either from Stampin Up or Sizzix, as Sizzix is stamped in the corner.

I  popped the heart in several places to give more dimension to it.  I also used Rhinestones to embellish the center of the flowers.  The Whisper White Organza Ribbon is from the Occasions catalog, soon to expire May 31.

The inside sentiment is from the Rose Wonder Stamp Bundle (retiring as of June 1)  May 31 will be the last day to purchase it.

I have had a terrible thing, terrible to me anyway, happen to my blog. If you browse older blog post, you will find many of the pictures missing.  How this happened I have no idea.  My blog host told me the only way to get them back would be to insert them again and then post again as an update.  So if you go to older post that is what happened.  They said I must have gotten hacked and the pictures got deleted.  Maybe some of you have had this happen also.  I probably would not have noticed but wanted to go back to an older post to see if I had posted something on it. Did I ever receive a shock when I saw what had happened.  So, beware of your post.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by.  Come again!

Happy 80th

Happy 80th

These cards are for a dear friend, no pun intended, in Texas who will turn 80 on Saturday.  I made this one first but really didn’t like it.  I think it is too blah once a picture was taken of it.   I should have just stopped with it no matter how it looks, but being me I could not.

Stamp Set: Nature Sings and Balloon Adventure

Card Base: Crumb Cake – Cut 4 ¼ x 11. Scored at 5-1/2

Banner: Wood Texture DSP – Cut 4-1/2 x 1-1/2

Background on Card base: Stamped with Versa Mark using a stamp from Nature Sings

Mat for Large Deer: Basic Black Cardstock 3-1/4 x 3-1/4

Art Piece: Watercolor Paper 3 x 3

Dies: Stitched Layering and Circle Dies

Inside Sentiment: Balloon Adventure Stamp Set

####################

SINCE I DIDN’T LIKE THE FIRST CARD I THOUGHT I WOULD JUST MAKE A GENERIC CARD GOOD FOR ANYONE.

  1. Stamp Set: Balloon Adventure—Inside Sentiment
  2. Card base: Tranquil Tide– Cut 4 ¼ x 11. Scored at 5-1/2
  3. Mat: Melon Mambo Cardstock  —  cut 4 x 5-1/4
  4. Art Piece: From Picture Perfect Party DSP—cut 3-3/4 x 5
  5. Wink of Stella on the Flames of the Candles
  6. Happy Birthday Thinlits – One from Tranquil Tide, one from a scrap of another DSP—do not have the name, but you can use any coordinating DSP
  7. Inside decorations cut from Picture Perfect Party DSP—they look 3D when you look at the real thing.

Stay a bit longer, I made a third card and finally gave up trying to make the card I wanted that was in my brain, but I couldn’t get it out for some reason.

  1. Stamp Set: Balloon Adventure and Number of Years and Endless Birthday Wishes
  2. Card Base: Bermuda Bay – Cut 4-1/4 x 8-1/2. Scored at 4-1/4
  3. Whisper White Cardstock —  Cut 8-1/4 x 5-1/4  for Art Piece then scored in half at 4-1/8″. Die Cut using the largest of the dies from the Balloon Adventure Bundle, lining up the center of the die with the score line on your card, then run it through the Big Shot. The die cuts out the balloons, scores and embosses all at the same time.
  4. The balloons on the front were cut using the Balloon Adventure dies and the Balloon Punch from Stampin Up. They were cut from scraps of several different pieces of DSP. You can use what you have in your stash that you like.
  5. The happy birthday on the front is from a many year’s retired stamp set. I like the fonts of the set so use often.
  6. The 80 is cut using the numbers from the Number of Years Bundle.

The Inside panels are 2-1/4 by 5 cut from panels of 6×6  Picture Perfect Party DSP. The sentiment is from Endless Birthday Wishes.  The panel on the right is left to write a personal note.  If you have questions please call or email

It’s really hard to capture the fun of this pop-up die in a picture!  Again, looking at the real card instead of a picture, the balloons on the right and left panels look 3-D.

Well! that is it. I finally gave up and decided I needed to get this posted, no more card making.  I will probably end up making another as these are just not what I want.  Thanks for stopping by. Now on to the fabulous Nanette and her post for the day.
